Dr. Kamini Rao's Master Class

Watch Dr Ravi Prakash in a warm conversation with Padma Shri Dr Kamini Rao. He is the president of the Federation of Historic vehicles of India (a member of International Federation of Historic Vehicles.) Dr Prakash is a renowned former cardiac surgeon in Bengaluru and an antique car collector. Besides being a car enthusiast who owns one of the largest collections of vintage and classic cars in India, Dr Prakash is an agriculturist, floriculturist, horticulturist and a nature lover. He is an inspiration to all the people and especially to those who believe ‘following your passion can make the biggest difference.’

What makes you passion driven?

“You just need to be interested in something. When you start getting interested in something, you start putting your mind into how it should be…”

It is often said that ‘life is better when you have the hours for something you love.’ Now just when you feel you can’t cram some extra to your schedules, watch this exciting conversation of the former cardiothoracic surgeon from Bengaluru turned car enthusiast, businessman and much more. Dr Ravi’s passion and love for classic cars started when he was 19 years and now, he owns few of the originals in vintage car collections. His collection of vintage cars dates back to 1800 and some of his iconic collections include Motilal Nehru’s 1928 Lanchester, JRD Tata’s 1940 Buick Limousine, Kuvempu’s 1956 Studebaker President and possession of many other historically owned cars. During the show, Dr Prakash mentions about his first car in his collection of over 200 vintage cars and 70 antique motorcycles.

“My journey with Vintage Cars started then.”

The silver Sunbeam Talbot, once belonging to Lord Mountbatten – the last viceroy of British India, was his first vintage car and the story behind acquiring the same is something worth listening to.

“It was not just my passion driving me, but my family also helped me in furthering my passion.”

He mentions the immense support of his family in stimulating a love for his antique car collection. Everybody in the family is passionate about cars. When you get incredible support for something not only you enjoy but also your family; the love for vintage only escalates.

Importance of preserving historical automobiles

“These historic vehicles are not even 0.01% of the Indian vehicle population. These are the automotive history of our country and we need to treasure the automotive monuments like we treasure any other monument today.”

Maintenance of these classic cars is not easy and time-consuming. Dr Prakash agrees, stressing the fact that ‘quality time’ is necessary if we have to be somewhere on the top. A lot of these vintage cars have been smuggled out in the past and many others are lying in the junkyard. “We need the treasure the one’s left.” says the president of Federation of Historic Vehicles of India (FHVI) whose motto is: preservation of historic vehicles, promoting historic vehicles and restoration of historic vehicles. He emphasizes restoring antique cars not just for show but also for the younger generation to know the history of these vehicles: how things have evolved and how things are being today. There is a lot more history, a lot more feel and a touch of sophistication in vintage cars.

No regrets, Just lessons

“I don’t regret anything that I have done in my life.”

Dr Prakash has been into serious farming followed by management of safety and securities and his roles were diverse throughout. He was a National Champion in racing from 1981-1984 and has about 72 victories and 105 podium placings to his credit but relinquished his racer role to concentrate on the medical field. He was an All-India Treasurer BJYM from 1992-1996. The conversation gets engrossing where he discusses the incident saving lives of Indian Army.
