Dr. Kamini Rao's Master Class

This session of Dr Kamini Rao’s Master Class introduces you to the Founder Chairman and Managing Director of Narayana Nethralaya Eye Hospital, Dr K. Bhujang Shetty, who has been titled as a “Legend in Ophthalmology” by Times Health Care Achievers Award in 2018 in addition to the prestigious Rajyotsava award in 2010.

Dr Bhujang was born in a village near Kundapur, where his father had a Kirana shop. He had a very humble beginning. Dr Shetty later moved to Bangalore to complete his higher education. Talking of his early days in Baldwin Boys High School, he says: “In Baldwin’s, I was put in the first standard at the age of 10.” He further talks of cultural shock and much more. Though he states: “I’m a doctor by accident…” after getting into ophthalmology, he wanted to do the best of everything he could, the results of which we can see in Narayana Nethralaya, which was once only an eye clinic.

Did you know that there is a link between added sugar and addictive behaviour?

Alcohol affects the brain! Drugs affect the brain! Hold on; even sugar affects our brain. Externally sugar seems to be harmless, but internally, it’s killing us. Dr Bhujang Shetty states: “Sugar is more addictive than alcohol, tobacco and even drugs.”

We often reward ourselves with sweets and desserts, but little did we know that we are slowly getting addicted to it. Excess sugar releases opioids and dopamine in our bodies. Such surplus of dopamine makes us feel pleased and hence we end up countlessly repeating the food.

Do we need a reminder to eat our meals?

Well, hunger serves the purpose. From visual hunger to actual hunger, when our eyes detect something delicious, the brains are notified.

“Eat when hungry, stop when full. Never feel deprived!”

Our brains control everything in the body including hunger. Eating in absence of hunger only invites illness often attributed to changes in the food environment. Mindful eating is pivotal for this generation as it signals our body taste, satisfaction and fullness.

“Dreams are not the ones that you see while you sleep, but the ones that don’t let you sleep.”

Dreaming is the first step towards achieving one's goal, but acting towards those dreams are even more important. Those who work for their dream are the ones who achieve them. Walt Disney once said: “All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.” How beautifully Dr Bhujang recounts his dream to the viewers.

“Sugar and carbs have killed more people in the world than all the wars that were fought in the 20th century together.”

Dr Bhujang Shetty has a lot more to say. Don’t you want to know about his first interaction with actor Dr Rajkumar? How did he become the face of the ‘Eye Donation Movement’?
